5 Practical Steps In Overcoming Depression

How does a person move forward after trauma?  Can a person be healed of depression?  I faced a horrible trauma and for years I lived in a bed of depression.   Today, we’re going to look at the steps I took to walk in freedom.  God is the healer and He works with us.

In the last blog post, I shared how I lost my mom in a murder-suicide and how I walked through many hopeless years.  But I want you to know that God can change our stories….  I encourage to read my story HERE.

God has walked me through the healing process.  Here are some steps I learned in overcoming depression and great loss.  I am believing as I share my heart, you will find healing also.

5 practical steps in overcoming depression

Get out of the Bed!

You see, for years I had been praying for God to help me, to miraculously take the depression away.  I begged Him to take the sick feeling away.  But God was saying to me, I had to do something…..

The best way I can describe that day…

Because of the years I had battled with depression, it had a grip, it was like a stronghold.  It was like layer after layer pressed down on me.  In order for me to get out of bed, I had to take my leg and mentally make up my mind that day to get my foot out of that bed.

I promise you, it seemed like one of the hardest battles of my life.  I was looking destiny in the face.  Was I going to allow God to change my life forever?  I am so thankful I CHOSE to lift my leg out of the bed that day.

Replace It!

Some great replacements:

  • Listening to music or playing an instrument
  • Go for a walk or exercise
  • Cooking
  • Crafts or art
  • Spending time with a friend
  • Going to church or Bible Study
  • Shopping – even if window shopping
  • Volunteering

Be consistent and make up your mind ahead of time how you will replace the depression.  At the onset of it… don’t wait, make up your mind at that very moment.  Be prepared mentally how you will counter attack the depression or thoughts.   I think of it like when you are on a diet.  If you plan ahead what your menu is, it often goes better.  No plan could lead to eating anything.

Reach Out!

My dad gave me some powerful advise!  He said “If you are hurting, go do something for someone who is worse off than yourself”.   During a very hard time in my life, I chose to work at a mission and help feed the homeless.  I have also served at my church and went on mission trips.  It is so rewarding to reach out beyond yourself.  It is a great way to change your focus to something positive.

Dream again!

Knowing your purpose gives you a reason to live!  What are you created to do?  You are so VALUABLE to God!  He breathed life into you and put you on this earth at this very moment in time.  There are things only YOU can do!  People only you can reach with your gift, your art, your talent.

Begin to write down your visions and dreams.  Continue to cultivate your relationship with Jesus.  As you work with God and step out on the promptings inside of you, watch as He causes those dreams and visions to come to pass.

Some reading this may be like me.  Things may have happened that were not your fault.  I don’t know the level of hurt you have experienced.  I can only tell you what happened to me.  What I am about to tell you changed my life.

I was in tremendous pain emotionally for a long time.  My step-dad murdered my mother.  I used to relive the scene where he shot her and took her out my life.  It created horrific memories inside of me.  For many years nightmares, fear and shame consumed my life.   My step-dad changed everything in my world….

How could I forgive such a crime?  How could I forgive this man?  I was on a walk one day and I heard God say to “release them”.   My step-father that murdered my mother was coming to my mind along with others that had hurt me in my life.  I had to choose at that moment to forgive.

You may not be on a walk, but as you read this, the Holy Spirit may be is touching your heart about an individual or situation.  Ask God to help you forgive.  I don’t now know what has happened to you, but I do know with the help of the Holy Spirit you CAN forgive.  It is not in ourselves, but the Holy Spirit at work in us.   It can be the most simple prayer, it simply needs to come from your heart.

The Word of God is so powerful!  Please meditate on these scriptures.  If you are working through the forgiving process, please know it IS possible with the help of the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 6:14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

Mark 11:25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins

Imagine I am praying with you today.  Please, pray this with me with all your heart.  I believe change is going to happen in your life today!  God loves you!

Heavenly Father, thank you for loving me.  Thank you for caring for me and wanting me healed.  I surrender my life to you.  All I am, all I will be, I give you 100% of me.  I ask you today to help me in this process of overcoming.  Your Word says “We are more than conquerors through Christ Jesus”.  I am all yours.  Thank you for leading me and guiding me every day.  I know you are helping me walk in freedom and forgiveness.  May my life be an example of your power, and your love.   Thank you for this new season and new chapter in my life.  With your help God, I will follow through on the next step in my purpose.  Amen.
